Police capture woman in stolen mail truck after chase from Portland to Washington

A woman who allegedly stole a mail truck in Portland was captured tonight after she nearly hit two pedestrians in Old Town, then led Portland police and Washington state troopers on a chase up Interstate 5.

Portland police responded to a call of erratic driving about 7:30 p.m. in Old Town, said Detective Mary Wheat, a Police Bureau spokeswoman, and tried to stop the mail truck after they arrived. But the driver eluded them and headed onto Interstate 5.

Washington authorities picked up the chase after the driver crossed the Interstate Bridge. Squad cars lined the highway as the driver hit speeds up to 70 mph in what authorities described as a neighborhood-sized mail truck.

Troopers threw out spikes to puncture the truck's tires. The woman was arrested just before 8 p.m. at a Shell station off the La Center exit after she tried to run from the truck, the Washington State Patrol said.

U.S. Postal Service maintenance crews were working on the truck in the service's Northwest Portland complex and had left the keys in it, said Sgt. Thomas Butsch, a Washington State Patrol spokesman.

The woman apparently jumped into the truck and took off. She was wearing a blue vest that made workers suspect she was a disgruntled employee.

But a postal inspector who observed the woman at the Clark County Jail did not recognize her, Butsch said. At this point, he said, it appears "more and more likely" that she's not a postal worker.

The woman had no identification and would not talk to authorities, he said. She was carrying an expensive Nordstrom purse and wallet that still had price tags and security devices attached.

The woman was put into a holding cell at the jail. She faces felony counts of eluding arrest and possessing stolen property.

Maybe she's a postal worker wannabe.... and she needed something for her resumé.
